Barista: a person whose job involves preparing and serving different types of coffee. In the summer of 2015, I was a barista for a whopping two months, but I do have previous customer service experience and my boyfriend has been a barista for the last six years — those stories are ten times worse than mine.. I only worked at Ebar Nordstrom for a month due to the cutting of hours. I went from working 20 hours to maybe 10 but that’s a different story. After the first month, I found myself being a barista for Peet’s Coffee.
The first incident was during the lunch rush hour. I was at the register ringing up a man who ordered a large lemonade (we only had three sizes: small, medium, and large). He paid, I told him his drink would be on the right side of the bar and that a barista would call out his name. I proceeded to attend the next couple of customers. Around customer number three or four — he got his beloved lemonade.
I would like to continue with the fact that I had maybe been working there for two weeks. This dude interrupted the current customer and said, “This isn’t the size I ordered. I wanted an extra large lemonade. You charged me for an extra large”. At this, I looked up extremely confused. “We only have three sizes, sir. Small, medium, and large,” I replied. “No but I ordered an extra large,” he was basically screaming at this point.
I obviously had no idea what to do, so I turned back to the assistant manager and I tell her exactly what is going on. She looked at the guy and said “We don’t have an extra large size. That is the biggest size we have.” I’m not sure what it was but he finally said ok and left. What? I was so nervous after this encounter, I honestly felt like I was going to cry. I am dead serious. The mixture of anger and embarrassment did that to me.
I am constantly looking back to all my customer experiences I have had, I still wonder why people on the other side of the register are always on a power trip. Yeah there are always exceptions, but for the majority of my experience that has been the case. Regardless, can we all just agree to be kind to one another? We’re all humans and we all deserve to treat each other as equals.
