How To Deal With Unwarranted Flirting In The Workplace
Girl, I get it. Some creepy co-worker keeps on giving you the eye, and is always asking you when you guys are going to go on a date. Even if you don’t have a significant other, these actions can be annoying. In my case, it always made me feel uncomfortable. If you work at a store, the creeper is the last person you want to open or close with. This has happened to me too many times, and I never knew how to respond.
I got you though.
Here are 5 ways to get out of a sticky situation
- Be upfront
Tell them to stop, and be honest about how uncomfortable it makes you feel. I know, this may not be the ideal situation if you hate confrontation, but do something before it gets worse.
- Confide in another co-worker
Ask a fellow co-worker to hint to the flirter that they should stop. Sometimes the creepers won’t understand until an “outsider” points out why they should stop.
- Respond with sarcasm
This is tricky. Some flirters will take this as a gesture of approval, but some may get the hint and stop.
- Ask your significant other to come to your workplace
Again, this one is tricky. You have a couple of different ways to deal with this. One, your S.O. can tell the creep to stop flirting with you, or the simple action of them visiting will be a good enough hint.
- Talk to your supervisor/HR
The most efficient way to stop the flirting is to get others with power involved. It will make it clear to him/her that you aren’t interested, and how uncomfortable it truly makes you.
I know it can be awkward to speak up, but if you don’t, that person may never get the clue. If you have any suggestions on how to deal with unwarranted flirting in the workplace please leave them in the comments below.
